I'm just a normal mum, a craft fanatic who works part time. My creative craft journey began recently to take a whole new direction.
My friend was suffering from hair loss as a side effect of receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer and she decided that funky chemo head wear was a great alternative to her uncertain feelings towards wearing a wig. The lovely people at Guys Hospital told her about the stylish and comfortable cancer turbans and headscarves available from Hipheadwear.
As a designer of usually fairly quirky fairy tale inspired creations, I immediately saw a way to lift and enhance a stylish and functional chemo hat. I wanted to make a collection of one-off, luxurious clasps, capable of holding a head scarf in place and making a statement that this is not so much about covering up hair loss as it is about the adornment offered in the combination of the beautiful, comfortable fabrics with the glittering, exotic jewellery.
I began experimenting with beautiful beads and fabrics. I found myself hand stitching some bespoke head brooches. Initially they were just for my friend and completely unique one-off pieces. My friend was so pleased with my designs she decided to email hipheadwear.co.uk about them.
To be given that vote of confidence is a really wonderful thing. It got me thinking about how everyone needs that, especially at a difficult time in their life.
So I started thinking up new designs and digging through my craft supplies and pulling out vintage beads and all those special beads and bits I had been telling myself were someday for 'best'. When you’re feeling flat or having a hard time, I wish I could provide something to make every day the 'best' !
My friend and I nicknamed the head scarf brooches 'Turban Glams' so that name is now on my Etsy listings. I was then really honoured to have my pieces featured in the Autumn photo shoot for Hipheadwear and I decided to tell people about the work of Hipheadwear in my Etsy listings. It is such an exciting journey for me - just a normal mum and crafter - now feeling very proud to be helping women feel glamourous at a time when they need it most.
I love working with people to create a design that will add some glamour, Joy and enhancement not only to an outfit, but also to a person's self-confidence and empowerment.
